<image:caption>Line graph of Australian energy consumption from 2008 to 2018. The lines represent four fuel types: coal, oil, gas and renewables. Energy consumption is on the vertical axis and years are on the horizontal axis. Consumption of renewables, gas and oil show a steady increase, and coal decreases. Oil overtakes coal in 2010 and has the highest consumption by 2018.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Great graphs</image:title>
<image:caption>The first graph in the pair shows the state and territory populations in alphabetical order, from A for ACT to W for WA. The graphs rise and fall by state. NSW has the highest population, and is listed second, and Vic has the second largest population and is second last in the graph. The second graph shows the populations listed in order from smallest to largest. The NT has the smallest population, with the shortest bar, followed by relatively short bars for ACT and Tas. The bars begin to rise noticeably in height for the rest of the states, with Vic and WA the last two, and the tallest, bars.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Great graphs</image:title>
<image:caption>The first graph in the pair is a donut graph, with numbers next to each circular section of the graph correlating to the number of COVID-19 infections in that country. The countries are listed in the legend at the bottom of the graph, with colours corresponding to their section of the donut graph. The US and India have the highest number of cases, although it is difficult to discern which is highest unless the numbers are read, followed by Brazil. The second graph shows the same data in a bar chart, with the countries listed in order of infections from highest to lowest. It is clear that the US has the highest number of infections, followed by India and then Brazil.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Great graphs</image:title>
<image:caption>The first graph in the pair shows the number of voters who voted either ‘Yes’, ‘No’, or ‘Undecided’ to the question of whether they are satisfied with the Prime Minister’s handling of COVID-19 in Australia. The first graph appears to show that one-third more people voted ‘Yes’, whereas the second graph appears to show that twice as many people voted ‘Yes’. The difference between the two graphs is that the y-axis starts at 0 in the first graph and 1,500,000 in the second, distorting the relative sizes of the bards in the graph.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The first graph in the pair shows book sales by month, with the months listed in order of the number of book sales from lowest to highest. The first month in the graph is July, with the fewest book sales, October appears in the middle of the graph and December at the end of the graph, with the highest number of book sales. The second graph has the months listed in chronological order, with January first, followed by February, etc., until reaching December as the last month. December has the highest number of book sales, with November and May second-largest.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Some of these editing and writing challenges require particular skills that I have built up over years of study and work, as a scientist, researcher, professional communicator and editor.</image:title>
<image:caption>My scientific background includes a Bachelor of Science in Forestry and Wildlife from Virginia Tech in the US, and a Master of Wood Science and PhD from the University of Melbourne. I have also worked in research, in the private sector as a development scientist for a timber preservative chemical supplier, and in the government research sector with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). After leaving CSIRO, I completed a Graduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). I have worked as an editor for over ten years. My project management experience with large multidisciplinary teams helps me to coordinate the creation of substantial and complex documents with input from team members from multiple departments and organisations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - I incorporate plain English editing and accessibility principles into every project I work on.</image:title>
<image:caption>Accessible and inclusive publishing benefits all readers by ensuring elements of writing style, such as word choice and sentence length, and the visible elements of a document, such as fonts, colours and layout, meet certain guidelines. Accessible publishing also incorporates specific tools, such as screen tips and alt text, to facilitate integration with assistive technology. I am an Accredited Editor with the Institute of Professional Editors Ltd in Australia. I am also a Distinguished Editor in the Life Sciences with the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences in the US and an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading in the UK.</image:caption>

Custom publishing is not limited to printed books and reports. I can also help you produce your book in a digital format like PDF, EPUB and other formats suitable for eBook readers. If you would like to sell your books, I can help you source the necessary ISBNs (International Standard Book Number) and barcodes to make your book suitable for retailers. And if you only want to print a handful of copies for your family and friends, I can do that too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Billycan Press - What is the publishing process like?</image:title>
<image:caption>I take you, step by step, through the publishing process. I will help you finalise the text you have already written by editing it for you. If you have a story to tell and don’t want to write it yourself, I can conduct a number of recorded interviews and write it for you. I can help you choose the photographs you would like included in the book. I can even scan old photographs for you, or take new photos. I then engage with a designer, if necessary, who can improve the look of the book by altering the fonts and design. A final PDF of the book is produced for you to read over and approve. Once approved, the book is printed. The final file may also be converted into digital formats for eBook readers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Editing for government - Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).</image:title>
<image:caption>Writing, editing and proofreading. The Victorian Government established the Barwon River Ministerial Advisory Committee (Barwon MAC) in early 2019. I was contracted to help complete the committee’s final two reports. When I received the draft Barwon MAC Final Recommendations Report, it needed substantive editing and had to be delivered to the Minister for Planning and the Minister for Water within two weeks. I attended a Barwon MAC meeting and facilitated discussion to enable the report to be finished. I edited the report in close consultation with the committee members and the DELWP Project Manager and Project Officer. Additional text sections were added to enhance understanding, and portions of text were rewritten, deleted or rearranged. I also wrote additional text relating to the interests of Traditional Owners. I worked closely with a Barwon MAC member to ensure this text accurately represented the activities and values of Traditional Owners. Upon completion of the final draft of the report, I ensured sign-off by Barwon MAC and DELWP representatives and worked with the designer to create graphic and layout elements to enhance sections of the report. I proofread the designed report prior to finalisation and submission to the ministers. I then attended a second Barwon MAC meeting to prepare for writing and editing the Barwon MAC Community Consultation Summary Report. DELWP provided project documents and consultants’ reports as background information for a high-level summary of the community consultation process and results. The report required substantive rewriting, and a significant amount of new content was added. I proofread the designed report prior to finalisation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Editing for business - Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.</image:title>
<image:caption>Editing. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is the peak body for the resources sector. With over 13,000 members, AusIMM delivers development services, runs a Chartered Professionals program by Royal Charter, maintains an events program and publishes a range of titles of interest to its members. The publishing arm of AusIMM occasionally outsources editing to help maintain their publication schedule. AusIMM needed the manuscript for The Geology and Resources of New Zealand Coalfields to be edited in preparation for publication and to ensure consistency with the client’s house style, with particular emphasis on checking references and citations, and figure captions. A document outlining AusIMM’s house style was provided, as well as a word list. The manuscript extent was 364 pages, with more than 250 footnotes, 550 references and 150 figures. I completed the editing within a tight timeline. The references and citations required extensive corrections in both style and usage. Many references lacked citations, and many citations lacked references. After the edited manuscript was returned to AusIMM and corrections had been made, I was asked to run a second check of the references and citations. At the author’s request, AusIMM mentioned my work in the acknowledgements section of the monograph.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Copyediting. I was engaged by the publisher to style and copyedit the textbook manuscript. This involved working directly with the authors on a daily basis, resolving queries directly with them and reviewing all of my proposed edits. Rewriting the definitions of glossary terms was also required, as well as photo research. The manuscript drew heavily upon a previous version of the textbook, and information in the manuscript had to be checked very closely for scientific accuracy. The understanding of the scientific concepts covered in the curriculum had been updated, and in some cases changed, since the previous version of the textbook. For example, scientific names had to be verified as some of the animals had been reclassified due to developments in the fields of genetics and evolution. All the diagrams in the textbook were redrawn, requiring me to write detailed artwork briefs for each one and edit the artwork at each iteration to ensure the diagrams were correct. A consistent colour scheme for DNA, RNA and associated nucleobases, sugar and phosphate was implemented across all of the diagrams to help student understanding.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Member of editing panel. CSIRO is Australia’s national science research agency. With over 5,500 employees, CSIRO has research centres in all of Australia’s states and territories working to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges, and using science to make a positive future for people across the globe. The CSIRO Northern Australia Water Resource Assessment (NAWRA) was an integrated, multidisciplinary investigation of opportunities for water and agricultural development in northern Australia. For 2½ years, over 100 scientists worked together to investigate three priority river catchments in northern Australia, delivering water resource assessments and identifying irrigated agriculture opportunities. Potential environmental, social and economic impacts, as well as risks associated with water resource use, were also assessed. The editing panel worked remotely as a team to edit and proofread more than 30 technical reports, three catchment reports that integrated the technical information into a catchment story, three summary reports and a key findings document. Large reports were often broken into individual chapters and divided between the editors on the panel. The revised chapters were then combined into one final document. The PerfectIT editing tool and a comprehensive style guide assured consistency within and between these documents. The editing panel was specifically acknowledged in the reports: “Our documentation, and its consistency across multiple reports, were much improved by a set of copy-editors and Word-wranglers who provided great service, fast turnaround times and patient application (often multiple times) of the Assessment’s style and convention standards.” The NAWRA team, including the editing panel, was awarded a 2020 CSIRO Collaboration Medal for work on “the world’s most extensive, multi-disciplinary water resource study”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Editing standards and codes - PF Olsen Australia.</image:title>
<image:caption>Copyediting and proofreading. In 2020, the consulting firm PF Olsen Australia was appointed to review the Forest Safety Code for Tasmania. The Forest Safety Code needed to be amended as a result of changes in legislation brought about by the adoption of the nationally harmonised Work Health and Safety Act 2012. In the months prior to engaging me as an editor, PF Olsen had gathered extensive feedback and released a preliminary draft. The draft Forest Safety Code required substantive (or structural) editing to make sure that the modifications brought about by the review process were seamlessly incorporated into the document. In my editing, I made sure that the intent of the Code was reflected in the language and content of the text. Particular attention was paid to verifying that words that required definitions were styled as defined terms and appeared in the glossary. An effort was also made to limit repetition in the Code, by ensuring the common risks associated with all forestry operations appeared in one chapter, and then risks aligned with specific tasks and processes appeared in individual chapters afterwards. The edited draft was then professionally designed and typeset by Craig Poore and released as a Consultation Draft. After the Code has been designed and typeset, PF Olsen facilitated three industry workshops and invited further written feedback, and incorporated suggested changes to the Code. After the amendments were incorporated into the typeset document, I proofread the final PDF to confirm that there were no errors. Heading levels and fonts were checked closely to ensure they were correct. After the update of the Forest Safety Code, the review committee and the Tasmanian forest industry presented the document as an Exposure Draft to the Minister for Justice and recommended that it be adopted as an amendment to the previously registered Code of Practice.</image:caption>
